Where to Find the Best Hiking in Southern NH

1. The Wildcat Falls Conservation Area

  • Where? Merrimack, NH
  • Trail System Length: Main trail 2.2 miles
  • Difficulty: Easy

Wildcat Falls Conservation Area in NH offers a serene hiking trail through lush surroundings, leading to the picturesque Wildcat Falls—a tranquil oasis. The main trail is a 2.2-mile loop that’s mostly easygoing terrain and fine for the average beginner. You’ll take a path alongside the Souhegan River until you reach the falls, and then loop back to the beginning where you started.

2. Winslow State Park

Winslow State Park offers well-maintained trails that wind through picturesque NH landscapes, from dense woodlands to open meadows. Hike to the summit of Mount Kearsarge and be rewarded with stunning views and a fire tower. The Barlow Trail, known for its wildflowers, is perfect for a more leisurely climb to the summit. For more adventure and rugged terrain, the Winslow Trail offers a moderately challenging ascent. In either case, once you make it to the top, you get awesome panoramic views from the mountain’s plateau.

3. Purgatory Falls

Purgatory Falls has a large system of trails that range in difficulty and length. Some trails are as short as half a mile, while others can be five miles or longer. The main trail along Purgatory Brook takes you alongside three different waterfalls and varied terrains. By contrast, the Wah Lum Loop leads to an open area with awesome views of Pack Monadnock. All trails are well-marked and can get muddy during rainy seasons, so wear good footwear.

4. Tamposi Trail Loop

  • Trail System Length: 2.2 miles
  • Difficulty: Moderate

Tamposi Trail is a beautiful but short hike that has almost an entirely uphill ascent on the way to the top of Bald Mountain. This is one of those Southern NH hiking trails that is stunning to take in the fall once the leaves have turned because the view from the top is impressive. However, there are a handful of nice vantage points the entire way up to the top from some of the jutting boulders and rock formations.

5. Monadnock State Park

  • Trail System Length: 70+ miles
  • Difficulty: Varied

The Monadnock region is one of the most prized hiking areas in the entire state of NH. This area is crisscrossed with mile after mile of incredible hiking trails that work well for people of all ability levels. There are even a few trails that are handicap-accessible. Mt. Monadnock is one of the largest mountains in the state at more than 3,100 feet. The areas surrounding the mountain are riddled with sloping, rising, and gentle trails that attract over 100,000 hikers annually. You could go with a simple trek like the White Dot or White Cross or take on bigger challenges like the Birchtroft.
