Classic Cannabis Strains Everyone Should Experience

1. OG Kush

  • THC Range: 20 to 25%
  • Lineage: Hybrid
  • Top-Level Effects: Happy and chill

OG Kush is perhaps one of the most well-known classic weed strains. There are a handful of stories about where OG Kush originated from and how it got its name. Some say the strain originated in California, while others claim Florida. There have been mentions that the strain is tied to everything from Chemdawg and Hindu Kush to Lemon Thai and Original Gangster (OG) in terms of genetics. In any case, this well-balanced hybrid tends to leave you feeling happy, relaxed, and hungry. OG Kush has parented an impressive collection of other OG cannabis strains, including one of our California partner’s signature strains, Marathon OG.

2. Strawberry Cough

  • THC Range: 19 to 26%
  • Lineage: Sativa-dominant
  • Top-Level Effects: Energizing and chatty

Strawberry Cough got its name for two obvious reasons. This is one of those classic weed strains sure to make even seasoned tokers cough, and it has an undeniable flavor similar to strawberries. Strawberry Cough was created over a decade ago by crossing Strawberry Fields and an unnamed Haze-family cultivar. The end result is a Sativa-leaning strain with loads of flavor, uplifting cerebral effects, and a tendency to make people feel more sociable.

3. Sour Diesel

  • THC Range: 17 to 26%
  • Lineage: Sativa-dominant
  • Top-Level Effects: Energized and creative

One of those old weed strains with a story behind it, Sour Diesel (aka Sour D) is said to be an accidental cross between Chemdog 91 and Super Skunk. The breeder is said to accidentally have pollinated his female Chem 91 plant with a Super Skunk clone he had carried back from Amsterdam. However this cultivar came to life, it is undeniably a prolific pick and has been for nearly 30 years. Sour D is known for offering an uplifting, energizing bud with a nice creative boost, and, of course, has a pungent smell of soured diesel.

4. Blue Dream

  • THC Range: 15 to 27%
  • Lineage: Hybrid
  • Top-Level Effects: Relaxed and uplifted

Blue Dream is an old-school weed strain that came about by crossing two other classic cannabis strains: Blueberry and Haze. There are many versions of Blue Dream, however, from many different cultivators. Therefore, THC ranges can vary drastically. In any case, this classic almost always has a telltale sweet berry flavor, and, true to its name, puts you in an uplifted but dream-like state.

5. Durban Poison

Durban Poison

  • THC Range: 19 to 24%
  • Lineage: Sativa
  • Top-Level Effects: Energetic and focused

It is rare to find a pure Sativa cannabis strain, but Durban Poison actually is when it comes from the right grower. DP was brought to the U.S. from South Africa by a cannabis activist all the way back in the 70s. Today, Durban Poison is a highly sought-after medical cannabis strain due to its said potential to help with things like nausea and pain without disrupting productivity.

6. GG4

GG4 bud

  • THC Range: 12 to 26%
  • Lineage: Hybrid
  • Top-Level Effects: Sleepy and happy

Call it Gorilla Glue, Original Glue, or simply GG4, but no matter the name, this strain will likely go down in history as one of the classic weed strains. GG4 is a hybrid but leans heavily on the Indica side of genetics with a lineage that includes Chocolate Diesel, Chem’s Sister, and Sour Dubb. This strain is all sticky and sweet with an almost chocolate-diesel flavor.

7. Jack Herer

  • THC Range: 15 to 24%
  • Lineage: Hybrid
  • Top-Level Effects: Euphoric and energizing

Jack Herer, the man, was a dedicated cannabis activist, and the namesake weed strain makes it easy to see why Herer fought the good fight. Jack Herer is a hybrid but with a Sativa dominance, but this strain is all uplifting and euphoric with a tendency to leave people active and sociable. The exact genetics behind this old weed strain has never been fully revealed, but some say it is related to Shiva Skunk, Northern Lights, and Haze.
